Upgrade from Pop Up????

We've had our Pop Up for about 8 years now, and have really enjoyed it. We really like the openness of it. It's a 12ft box, and has a slide for the dinnette.

The popping up and down before we leave to load, and when we get back are getting kinda old. We don't always have to do that, but probably 75% of the time we do at least one of them.

We have a two kids, 12 and 14, that are wanting to take friends along now, and that is tough in the pup.

We are thinking about upgrading to a TT. I've already got a 3/4 ton truck, but it is a gasser, so we can tow the size that we are considereing.

Is the set up /take down / loading, alot easier with a TT?

Do you feel closed in in the bedroom? The pup is so open.

I've really got mixed feelings on upgrading, I'd like the space, and I think it would be easier, but I hate to drop 20k on a new camper.

Give me your thoughts if you've made the jump.

Thanks

  • We updated from pop-up to TT three years ago. We had the pop-up 20 years, a coleman royale. You know what, I miss it at times. Cant beat queen and king beds at each end. You might be a pop-up kinda guy. We do not miss set up and take down of the pop-up which seems to be the one reason people tire of a pop-up. I do like the TT but sometimes.---
I like the new off road type pop-ups you see now.
  • We made the transition from a PUP to a TT a few years ago and I will never go back. We opted for a bunk house model for our kids aged 7 and 11. If I could change one thing, I'd buy a model with a slide but we still love the TT.

Set up and take down is fairly simple after you have done it a few times. My DW knows what to do now and the both of us can set up in about 15-20 minutes if we are at a water/electric site. Loading is much easier since you can stand up in the TT and most models have pass-thru front storage and rear storage. We can also throw junk on the beds and unpack at the CG if needed.

I do feel a bit cramped in our bedroom, especially when changing but it's a place to lay my head, not hang out. We have a 16' awning and I prefer to sit under it and not in the camper all the time. You can buy screen kits for the awning if you want protection from the bugs.

Go to a dealer and walk in some campers with your kids and get a feel for the space...you cannot get that realization by looking at floor plans on the web. In our TT, the tight spot is between the kitchen and dinette. You can get a descent non-slider for under 15k if you are on a budget.
