There is a difference between used for work (to and from) and used for business (transporting goods for money). In that case when I bring my work tools home in my X then back to work I should have a DOT number too!
If the truck is not registered to a business then it is personal!
If you are a union mason bringing your personal tools to the job, then I would agree that you do not need DOT numbers. If you are taking the company's tools in a qualifying weight class vehicle from job to job, I would argue that you need them.
I know 10 years ago not a single truck of ours, minus those requiring a CDL, had our name or DOT number and we were never bothered. Then when every person who owned a "landscaping business" starting toting trailers around with 1-ton trucks, the DOT starting cracking down and now we have DOT numbers on everything but the Project Manager's vehicles.
