Used 2000 Coleman Cheyenne Grand Touring?

So, after sitting on the fence for 9 long years (ever since I immigrated to Canada) and saving some money aside, I decided that this year I will finally buy my first RV!

Now, I can't justify buying a new one, (only going to use it 4-6 time a year for 3 night max at any time) so I am looking at the used market.

I have found a Used "2000 Coleman Cheyenne Grand Touring" (sleep 8!) for a decent price (in Canadian market prospective) and I wanted to ask:

Is a Used "2000 Coleman Cheyenne Grand Touring" a good buy!? (or should I avoid it)
When buying used Pop-up, what should I look for?

Thank you!

  • Thanks to your advice everybody, I knew what to look for, and I end up NOT buying the Pop-up.
The underside of the front storage box was all moldy, and the roof had lots of waves...

    I walked away.

A few days later I have found a 2008 Rockwood (1910) for the same price!
It was barely used (and felt like new).
The owner bought the Pop-up new, but after couple of times the wife didn't like camping in a folding tent, so last weekend he end up buying a 30f Travel Trailer, and needed the Pop-up to be gone and make room for the 30f Travel Trailer ASAP.

I like the 2008 Rockwood a lot, and I am very excited! (This is my first RV!)
    Summer, here I come!

  • Personally I would look at it and if the roof is flat with no cracking, ripples, or waves and the rest of it looks good I would consider buying it. The thing is 14 years old so I figure if the roof is going to fail it would have already.
  • LOVED my Cheyenne! It was smartly laid out for a 10 foot box and was built with quality. I was lucky enough to find one that had the roof replaced by the factory with the newer "Strata" version of the ABS roof which was stronger and better designed. The factory also replaced the storage box on mine. If it's in good shape, go for it!!
  • Had a 2000 Cheyenne for many years and loved it! Never had any problems with the roof. We did have problems with the seal on the front storage box leaking, but once we repaired it with a heavier seal and some foam gasket material never had any more. Like others have said, check everything over well!
  • Run fast and far.
The defective roof will fail especially with the weight of a roof air on it.
I know a man that worked for a Coleman dealership and he said always avoid the Coleman's with the ABS roof.
  • As Bondebond noted, check out the roof very closely, especially around the air conditioner.

Look inside for signs of water leaks/damage on the roof, floor, cabinets, etc. Soft floors are a classic sign of water damage. If you find any soft spots, look underneath at that location. (Don't be worried that the subfloor appears to be unprotected; it's that way so any moisture that gets into the composite wood can also get back out. They used marine-grade adhesives in the subfloor.)

Check out operation of the water and electrical systems. Verify there's a 30A main breaker in the power center. If there isn't one and you decide to buy, send me a private message and I'll go through how to add one. I highly recommend this easy and inexpensive add (about $4US).

Check condition and age of the tires. Look for the DOT code. The last four digits indicate the week and year of manufacturer; 1614 would indicate the tire was made the 16th week of 2014. Look for cracks and damage to the sidewalls.

If the trailer has brakes verify operation of them. Your tow vehicle will need a brake controller installed. Most recommend one of the Prodigy controllers. There may be some work to do to the tow vehicle too, such as adding a charge and brake electrical wires back to the trailer plug.

Let's see, what else? Does it open and close smoothly? If possible, ask the current owner when the wheel bearings and brakes were last checked/maintained.

    Good luck!
  • Hello and best of luck to you in your searching.

The Coleman Cheyenne is a very nice unit with a great floor plan. I like seating that doesn't block the isle. And a front cargo box is really great for storing gear.

At this point, condition is everything when you're looking at Colemans, really any used pop up. You are smart to check in on any possible issues with various PUPs.

The Colemans (made by Fleetwood) had a string of bad roofs that used ABS as the outer covering. The model you are considering has such a roof. You can easily tell as the whole roof looks like it was molded out of a single piece of plastic. You don't see any seams or plastic caps at the corners.

There was a number of these roofs that failed and started to delaminate and/or bow inwards at the middle. It starts out as small cracks, turns into bigger cracks then eventually sections of plastic just fall off.

So, not to scare you off but look closely at the condition of the roof (again, true with ANY PUP) for signs of cracking or bowing. If you don't see any, then I would say keep looking at it for other condition issues and make your decision on how you like it all.

The other big "gotcha" is the front storage compartment. The lids are notorious for leaks. If it is cracked, has a bunch of caulk or shows any signs of mold/water damage, be wary of it. Many people have had to make new lids or otherwise solve the problem of leaking lids.

Check all floors for soggy areas or anything that gives too much.

There's a whole host of other things to check for but those are some of the biggest ones.

Don't be turned off by Colemans or Fleetwoods, even with ABS roofs. Many of them are in great condition and were some of the stronger built units out there. I really love my Fleetwood.
