I had a 2000 7.3 diesel. I put a Banks chip in it when it had 30,000 miles on it and sold it when it had 250,000 miles and it never had any problems
Same with my Father's 2001 7.3L and that now has over 300k and my brothers old 2010 CTD that he sold to a friend who was a fishing guide using it to tow his boat 160 miles to the coast just about every weekend and now has over 350k on it.
With many of today's diesels, the emissions equipment does more harm to the engine through oil/fuel dilution from regens and soot buildup from the EGR than a tune will and in many cases a tune will eliminate or reduce these problems dramatically. As long as the previous owner was not an idiot that towed heavy on a high powered tune or did not add any supporting mods(built trans, upgraded intercooler/turbo, head studs, lift pump/filter, etc...) to allow them to reliably run the higher power tunes, then I would not be afraid of a tuned diesel.
It is also worth mentioning that not all tuning is the same either. Some software like EFILive is better than others because they allow for more parameters while still keeping stock safeguards. Some software like H&S that allowed the end user to change some of the parameters(timing, duration, boost, etc) was dangerous in the hands of a consumer who did not know what they were doing, and blown head gaskets were common for people running these tuners. Having reputable tuning software from a tuner that knows what he is doing makes a world of a difference in how your truck handles certain power increases. In many cases, software like EFILive made the tables better and smoother than the stock tunes that are made to meet emissions above all else even at the cost of reliability in many cases.

Good post! Unfortunately, in most places, you can’t (legally) delete the EGR systems. “Deleting” the EGR system will make your diesel live a longer, happier life....and helps keep more money in your wallet! memtb
