Don't do anything, if you get pulled over just tell them your camper is registered in Ca.
OR Florida, we don't register here either. I'm thinking states that only have a few campers, don't bother with it, some that have more, do it because the revenue it generates is worth the effort.
States all decide on different methods to collect operating revenue, and some really abuse the tax/model on either property or real estate. Those that chose property, such as high fees on vehicles LOSE out because people will go to states like Montana and S Dakota to save on the exorbitant fees. Interestingly enough, if those states came in line with other states on this specific, they'd probably get more revenue as the owners will just register in home state.
Instead, they want an arm and the first-born, so people revolt and find other (legitimate) ways to pay less. And, the home state loses.
In Mass for example, not only does it charge 7% sales tax on a new or used vehicle, it then charges a "Property tax" on top of that almost equal to sales tax ... so, instead of the 7% tax, it nearly doubles (5% I think), and on a $40,000 truck that's $4800 ... and they charge that EVERY YEAR on a declining scale as it ages.
And it wonders why folks try to register in NH, or Florida, or Texas, or S Dakota for the even higher RV sales. Imagine buying and RV in Mass at $150,000 ... Sales tax = $10,500 and then the add-on fee, $7500, so $18,000 just in tax. That stings any wallet.
And it upsets folks that pay it because it "supposed to fix roads", and we drive around on potholes, dips, valleys, rocks, highways, and
damage our shocks and vehicles ... not a surprise to me.
As of this minute, MASS is attempting to tax me for a vehicle I no longer own, AND, I live in Florida now. Mass says (get this) just pay the tax so we can clear our books, and then apply for a refund.
The mind of a five-year-old state worker actually thinks this is OK.
For a refund, after 30 days, you have to appear in person at a tax hearing. Of course, it's way past 30 days, so I'm now supposed to pay MASS the tax, then apply for a hearing date, then drive from Florida to MASS and back, just so I can get a couple hundred bucks refunded to me that I'm first GIVING them to cover its error. Not gonna happen.
