I pulled over to the side of the road and eventually I put it back in Drive and pulled out and everything was normal.
This vehicle is in great shape but I do not know the history of the power-train. I am considering dropping a new crate engine and transmission in it just for piece of mind.
Sir, you apparently haven't priced a new engine and trans, and based on your questions, aren't going to be doing that work yourself.
SO, ballpark, you'll spend more than the old truck is worth to do this and you don't have a bad engine or trans in the first place, or it wouldn't be "fine" most of the time.
It's an overheating or sensor type issue likely.
Really surprised there's no codes in this situation.
Fix the problem at hand, don't jack up the body and drive a new truck under it.
