Thanks for all the ideas. I did not think of the TPS, that is something to look in to as it happened on hills and flat land and temps were not the issue. I have a transmission temperature gauge and that was not the issue, as it was butt cold out that helped with the temp as well. I have a diagnostic tool and there were not any codes, that is what led me to think mechanical, but you never know.
As I stated, this truck (Excursion) does a great job pulling and it is real comfortable. I don't care about the gas mileage really. We are approaching the time when we are going to be doing a lot more long hauls and I really want piece of mind. I started getting the new truck fever a while ago and decided instead of dropping over $50k for a new truck, $8k for new engine and tranny would be a drop in the bucket. However, I do want to identify this problem first.
