Vent covers...

Hi there-

I have a Saleem P.T. in our property up in Michigan. Its 43 feet long. so we do not move it , it's stay there all year around. My question is there a way to prevent your vent covers on the roof from getting brittle do the exposure to the elements? This is the second one I change in 2 years the unit is a 2010 and its been sitting there since 2009 I don't know if hail did the damage or a branch fell on it. I don't see any branch on top of the roof.:M

All tips, and help are well come..

Thank you,
  • I just traded the same Minnie Winnie as you have in for a Arctic Fox - I guess you just keep changing those vent covers. They all seem like cheap materials. You are using the secondary mfg ones right?
  • X2 on the Maxxair. Search the Forum for more info. I wouldn't be without mine. You not only can leave them open in a rainstorm they can be open while traveling down the highway without being blown off!
  • The vent covers work. Get the larger one if you have a Fantastic fan.
I have one that was put on in 02 and another that was replaced in 06 because of hurricane Wilma.

Never have needed to replace the OEM lids under them that are 15 years old.
  • I used Krylon Fusion paint on all my vent covers and shower dome to help protect them from the FL and AZ sun. So far, so good.
  • If you are going to put vent covers on put one on that has a fan IN it.
I can't say enough about the Turbo Maxxair.

The fan is on the outside so you don't hear it AND turn that fan on and it takes the place of using the AC on numerous occasions and keeps your TT smelling nice and fresh because you can leave it open and/or fan running 24'7s. I install them on every RV I have owned. No cutting installation, it just snaps right over your existing vent and vent cover stays in place.

  • You can spray them with krylon patio fruniture paint. I do that to my sewer vent covers which are really susceptible to going brittle. It works. I have not found the same issue with maxxair covers. BTW if you do have a sewer vent cap break, I have found the plastic containers those disposable wipes come in work well in a pinch with duct tape. Just cut a couple of holes in the side.
  • For deteriorating sewer vent covers, I have found aluminum cat food cans work GREAT! I used the original steel mounting tab and riveted the can to the tab. Paint the whole ****tery white and you will have a cover than will never fall apart and it looks good too.

Or leave the broken cap off and calculate annual rainfall by the level of the water as it slowly climbs inside the pipe LOL.

UV radiation will breakdown any material in direct exposure and vent lids or covers (or the other parts of your trailer) are no exception.

The only way to prevent them from getting brittle would be to shield them from the source of the embrittlement, i.e. cover them up with a barrier that is impervious. It is for this reason I store my RV under cover. With your trailer's exposure to the elements I am afraid you have to decide between the lesser of two evils.

If I were you, I would put on cheap smoke-coloured vent covers over the vent lids and let them be the sacrificial part that gets brittle and not the vent lid, which would probably be harder to replace and have a simiar cost. Then when the vent covers do deteriorate just swap them out with a new one.
