Hi all--after 20 years of full-timing, the only rig we haven't had is a truck camper. We find that the way we are living now, being six months in one place and six months in another with living accomodations in each place, we are only using our C class motorhome two weeks of the year while we travel. We are beginning to think that a truck camper is the way to go. I would appreciate any input you can offer to help us in our search. I am more concerned with how much truck I need and will I be able to use a single rear wheel truck for most applications? Looking forward to reading all your helpful comments.

Shop for the camper you want. After you find that, you can determine if a single rear wheel will work or not.

Picking the right truck and camper has a lot to do with your intended camping style. And maybe your personal overall size. My wife and I eat and sleep in the camper and disappear all day for outdoor activity. Hence, a small 8.5' camper meets our needs. If one was a campground, stay in camp type, campers and therefore, trucks need to get bigger. (JMO)

If you're only using it for 2 weeks while you travel from point A to point B and back, then the one you already have paid for is the best.If you're looking for an excuse to buy a new toy - then just go for it!

Unless you want 4wd or larger towing capacity, I would suggest a Class B or C over a truck and camper. You will find that the cost per living space is highest in truck campers with typically not much more room than a Class B.

Met a couple that owned every thing from class A to truck camper,they were back in truck camper,they showed us their 1191 lance . They were hosting at Santee Cooper S.P. very nice older couple. Helped us to choose a Lance,but artic fox ,eagle cap,and chalet are nice campera also.

Ease of operation on a truck camper is just unreal. So easy to go wherever you want to go, if you don't go to big.

I still own vintage Prevost conversion and TC.
With kids gone guess what is getting used more?
I've been RV for almost 30 years and "had them all"
Did stay away from TC in the past, becouse with kids they were too small, but when our family downsized and TC come with luxury slides, we do have more space in TC that we did in ClassC.
Powerstorke beats ClassC engine by a mile.
Since I am using truck in business this way, or the other - TC eliminated one vehicle to pay fees for and maintain.

Tom, nice rig. You are ready for winter snows and summer sand dunes and every out-of-the-way place in between.
Usal. Pismo. Oregon Dunes N.P. Assatigue. Outer Banks. South Padre for a little sand that you can actually camp ON. With a gas V-10 you an also go to Mexico/Baja, which most newer diesel trucks cannot do because of the lower grade diesel that will ruin the pee canister. You have a fine, if thirsty set-up with plenty of power. If you plan on putting less than 200K miles on it, you are good to go.

My wife and I owned class A motorhomes for years, the most recent being a 36-foot diesel pusher with two slides. The motorhomes were great, but we decided we would rather have the capability to camp in out-of-the-way places and drive in snow without having to get out and install chains. So far, we're loving our little 8.5 foot truck camper.

The only reason for a truck camper is if you need the truck for other purposes.
Otherwise, a Class C and a toad will do what you want. Maybe you need a smaller Class C?
Maybe you're thinking that you can easily take the camper off the truck during travels. Fact is, not so much. Removing the camper requires solid, level ground and good lighting. Windy or rainy conditions, not so good.
So. . .it depends on one's needs and as previously stated, how you're going to use it.
