Water tank pj

Has anyone done this? Placed a flat water tank on the storage platform in the crew cab when you may need to have extra water. Use a small pump to transfer to the TC tank when needed. If it was flat it would still be usable space to store stuff.

Flat tank

You can request the placement of fill and drain.

The cost isn't bad either.
  • This method that I use now is a bit difficult to explain but those of you who can visualize will catch on quickly. I must admit this is not a new method and I picked it up on some RV forum.
Using a water container(7 gal container) and the winterizing, place the hose you would normally use to supply RV antifreeze to your pump in the water container. Turn the valve on. Go outside to your outdoor shower and remove the shower hose. Replace shower hose with a length of hose that will reach your input area where you fill your tanks. Turn the outside shower cold water valve on. Go back inside your RV and turn on the pump. This method will pump water out of your water container through your system into your onboard water tank.

You might consider one of the flexible water bladders / bags like they used on my sailboat. Much lighter than a poly tank, easier to move in and out of your truck when empty. Attachment points at the corners for anchoring where you want it. Comes with 1-1/2" fill inlet connection and 5/8" outlet.

Could build a light frame if you really want to store things on top of it.

    Defender has them on sale.
  • There's nothing wrong with with taking a hot shower each day. It's one of the reasons we have an RV instead of tent - A hot shower is one of my indulgences.
  • I am dismayed...I had no idea that the new TC's had so much water tankage...so if I added the 20 gallon extra tank my capacity that would be in between both of you. Actually I was thinking about the idea of going to burning man and needing the water. 99% of the time I have done very well with my meager 35 gallons. But still think it is a good idea, but maybe some $15 5 gallon water jugs like on coolers would do the job and could actually be easier to fill than a fixed tank...thanks for stimulating the thought process.
  • Our TC tank is 42 gallons and we have two additional 42 gallon tanks in our trailer. We use this additional supply with an inline pump to rinse off off-road vehicles or transfer water to the TC. When dry camping, we try to use the outside shower to avoid filling up the gray tank but also carry 30 gallon gray tote in the trailer.
  • That seems like a lot of money for a tank. Might be fine if it were installed somewhere in the camper. My tank is 35 gallons and I have never run out where I needed more water reserve. When I had a trailer I did carry a 7 gal tank of water and used a small pump I purchased at HF to pump the water into the holding tank. Way less money than you are talking about.
  • Sounds like a good idea, but I my camper holds 60 gallons. I usually don't even have it full.
