We weighed everything today.

Truck and camper in sig:

Truck without tailgate, 1/4 tank, no passengers. 8740 pounds. This was the tare weight I needed to DMV the truck. Unfortunately it didn't give individual axle weights and I have to extrapolate a bit to figure truck camper weight.

Truck/TC with 2 passengers full fuel, full propane, packed and ready to go. empty holding tanks. 10 gallons fresh water. 13,700 pounds. 300 pounds under GVWR.

Steer axle: 5300 pounds 700 pounds under axle/tire
Drive axle 8400 pounds. 1,350 pounds under axle.

Adding the weights of 2 passengers and fuel I believe our tare weight would have been an additional 600 pounds or about 9,340 pounds.

So it seems our AF1150 weighs roughly 4,360 pounds as weighed or about 4,700 pounds full of water. That is quite a bit less than I thought even after removing the generator and AC unit.

My old truck was a 2004 Dodge Ram 4x4 dually I was bit concerned about how the 2017 would handle the TC with the factory air suspension. The old truck was modified with air bags, sway bar, better shocks, better tires.

I have to say after giving the new truck an extended drive through the hills and some not so great roads...the new truck killed it. Much less sway, even stock. The factor air bags work great. The truck lowers down just about 1-1/2 " right on to the over load spring with is fairly thick and seems to mitigate sway very well. All the extra power and auto transmission is very nice. Also having the engine brake makes steep downhills a breeze.

We will be hitting the road to Alaska in a few days, so the real test lies ahead. :C

  • Well, it is what it is. Unless the scale wasn't accurate. A few things come to mind compared to the 2012 weight sheet.

Did 2012 models have DEF, DPF systems? That adds exhaust components as well as def holding tank, pump and associated plumbing, wiring.

I noticed poking around underneath that the air compressor and tank for the air ride is pretty big. Also there is still a spring pack along with the air bag system. All that must weigh something. Truck also came with 5th wheel prep which wasn't offered in 2012, so that may add some weight for the structural members in the bed.

Again this weight also included torklift frame mounts which were pretty beefy, and running boards.

Other than that I really haven't a clue. The fuel tank was 1/4 tank and the truck was empty. I was going for lowest tare possible without going to the trouble of removing the torklifts, spare tire, back seat etc.

I never weighed my old truck. The truck weighed more than I thought although that weight included Forklift frame mounts and side steps which I didn't feel like removing for the DMV tare weight. It also has the 5th wheel prep, spray in liner and most of the options Dodge offers. That could account for a small bit. The new truck does have a higher GVWR so perhaps the frame/running gear is heavier?

seems reasonable My 2011 F350 crew cab long bed diesel 4x4 dually sans tailgate and tiedowns scales at 8560
  • Reddog1,

Interesting! Me too because FCA spec sheet for the OP's Ram Laramie Diesel Crew Cab 4X4 clearly states 7759 lbs curb weight for the basic truck and 8017 lbs max curb weight with all available options. Black and white. Perhaps he has 723 lbs of dead bodies in the rear seat?

2017 same model Lamamie is within a few pounds of the same but you have to build the truck and add all options to get the total curb weight and it take a lot of time. Not that I care to waste that time again.

Thanks. We are pretty excited. Been dreaming about this for a long time.
