I just use a cheap wire welders brush. As soon as the food comes off from cooking I brush it while it's hot. Super simple.
X2 with wire grill brush
+3 on the welders brush. Very stiff and strong steel bristles.
Even better: rotary wire brush in a cordless drill like the one in the link below. That's what I typically use and it does a better job than anything I've tried.
Wire brush
I QUIT using any wire brushes on my grills.
A year or so back, my Daughter started choking partway through eating a hamburger which I had grilled for supper. Leaving out a lot of unneeded details she eventually was able to throw up a piece of burger which had a 1/2" long STEEL BRISTLE with it.
After this event I was trying to find alternative ways of cleaning the grill surface. Seen many online reviews which specifically mentioned wire brushes tend to leave bristles behind. Several reviewers ended up with a trip to the hospital to have the perforations to their throat fixed..
Reviews of other alternative grill cleaning utensils like stones and synthetic scrubbers also ended up looking hopeless due the NEED to THOROUGHLY WASH the surface after the use of such products. Stones and scrubbers tend to leave grit and or material behind as you use it so you have to wash the surface..
My conclusion is there is no SAFE way to ensure there is no bristles, grit or foreign material left behind.
I have now switched over to using a 6" wide putty knife to scrape off any leftover food from the grilling surface. Leaves no bristles or other potentially dangerous materials.
Throw your bristle brushes away and be much safer.
