That was a difficult piece of info to find. Apparently they were always cast iron, but recent models are PORCELAIN coated cast iron- which do not require seasoning.
I found that info on Weber's FAQ section of their website about 2 months ago when we got our grill. I believe I was searching for seasoning the grates as I found conflicting info on the net.
So far, we REALLY like the grates. They need a good 15 mins or so to fully heat up so the temp doesn't plummit when you open the lid. But such is the benefit of cast iron.
ETA: Porcelain enameled cast iron grates, not ceramic. Sorry for the confusion.
