It is more of a class rating, kind of like the 10,000 GVWR. The F250 diesels are usually 6,100 RAWR, and the gas like mine 6,200. I think the lowest 17" tires are 3,195, but most late model 250 tires will be 18"s with higher rating.
The F350 axle is rated for 7,000, but is the same axle as the 250. In any case, I follow the axle rating limits. In reality, the axle manufacturer rates the axles much higher.
Lots of room for argument in axle ratings, but you can't go wrong by staying under posted rating.
