weight distribution/sway or not

TV is a 2014 Tahoe with HD tow package, 8,000 lbs tow rating, pulling a flagstaff microlite 23' empty weight is 3630, been told I do not need a weight distribution/sway bar, would like to other opinions...

thanks

  • Everyone is guessing here because you wont know if you "NEED" a WDH in this case until you load your trailer and know actual weights. Or load it and tow it anyway.

I am on board with most here though, you will probably want one.
  • Yes, get a WDH. By the time you have the trailer on the ball and all of your camping paraphernalia in the back of the Tahoe, you'll be unloading the front axle quite a bit. With a WDH, you can put some of that weight back onto the front axle and have a much nicer ride.

FWIW, my rig is about 5K lbs. and I tow with an F-250. I use an E-qual-izer brand hitch with built in sway control.

With an "empty weight" of 3630, you might have a loaded weight of 5000#.
A corresponding tongue weight would be about 650#.

I believe the tongue weight limit for your Tahoe, without using WD, is 600#.

I would plan on using a WD/sway hitch.

  • My Kodiak is a little longer and a little heavier and I use the Andersen Hitch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRoQ_yQZQwQ . The Andersen not only takes out the sway but also takes out the bucking action. We used a conventional WD for a while but after several trips into the mountains did I make the switch and have never looked back.
  • the tahoe has a soft suspension .
a little assist from any equalizing hitch will help you .
you can get by with a used hitch of minimum capacity .
you can adjust the chain link at a relatively loose setting .
just enough to keep you level .
you should load your trailer 10 -15% on the tongue just like the big boys for the best handling .
each pound between the trailer axle and your TV hitch is controlled weight .
Every pound behind the TT axles is uncontrolled and wants to leverage your lighter weight tow vehicle .
