Western Montana fishing and NF campground reccomendations?

Who's done some campin and fishing over there?
Headed over next weekend.
Last year we went to Rock Creek east of Missoula and Clinton over the 4th. Not too busy, great location and fishing up rock creek. Kinda stumbled on a blue ribbon trout stream there....
Thinking about Yaak River/Pete creek outside of Troy this year. Looks like a sweet spot with lots of fishing options and some cool sightseeing to boot.
Planning to beat the crowd over for the weekend to a first come first serve NF campground.
Appreciate any reccomendations, thanks.

  • To close this out, we spent the Holiday weekend up near Troy. Stayed at the Yaak River NF campground just a few miles west of town on hwy 2. Awesome campground, not crowded, not even full most of the weekend, scored one of the spots right on the river.
Huge spread out sites with paved road and campsite pads. Nice for unloading the camper on since we were there a while.
Seen the sights in the area.
Did a bunch of fishing in the Yaak and Kootenai. Fishing was ok, kids did Better than me, lol.
Highly reccomend the area for a mtn camping getaway.
  • Wow Ralph! Have to take some time with that on the big screen! Super cool!
Jfet Dunn Creek looks right up our alley too. That's what we like, less crowds and less amenities.....that why we got a camper!
    Thanks guys!
  • Try Dunn Creek Campground and boat launch near Libby. It is a free place to camp right on the river. No facilities except pit toilets but they have quite a bit of room. We stayed there about a week and only had one or two other campers.

Here are some pics from when we were there last year:

  • I go to Western Montana every year to visit my cousin and fish. Done a lot of camping in that part of the state. Check out my multi-year campsite map here for some ideas. Click on the markers for campground descriptions.

    Have fun and fish on,
  • Thanks for the suggestions. That fishing access site is a good resource as well! Hadn't seen that before.
Hadn't looked at the snowpack. First of July last year the runoff was slowing down already. Maybe more lake fishing and some rafting is in order! That'll be easier for the kids to fish too
Thought Bulls were just catch and release. I'll look into that as well. Caught my first bull trout last year....
  • The closest I have been to Troy is Pole Bridge along the north fork of the Flathead where there is ample room to fish as it is mostly FS land. Same goes for the Troy area. Two things to be aware of, they are still in run off mode up there and will be for sometime. Second some of the tribs to those rivers are closed to fishing because of they are Bull trout waters, be sure to check the regs.

The sites can be found here- Search FAS and if you're interested I created a POI file to install on a Garmin GPS that lists the FAS and indicates if camping is allowed.

  • You might try South of Missoula as well from Lolo South. There is a lot of NF land East/West of 93. Do bring your bear spray. Lots of have been seen this year. Sorry that I can't be more help.

Most of the Western Montana rivers have been running high, so I don't know if you are expecting that or not. In the area of my ranch, a few people lost their driveways. I don't know what shape the roads are in, but you should check that as well.

I might camp next weekend, or maybe I'll just get by another week in the construction zone called remodeling where I am at the moment. ;)
