What about the 6.4L Power Stroke ???

I'm working a deal on a 2008 F-350 DRW King Ranch southern truck with 55K. The truck is what I want but I'm as afraid of the 6.4L as the 6.0L from what I've been reading. I don't know whether to grab this one or look for a high mileage 2011 with the 6.7L or jump ship and go with the Cummins. Any advise??

  • I'm not a fan of the 6.4 PSD and 07.5 -09 6.7 and to lesser degree the non DEF equipped cummins due to the emission issues these trucks suffered from. The Duramax faired off a bit better in their first generation emissions, but even their early DEF version had some teething problems.

I would however highly recommend any 6.7 PSD. My '12 with a 63k miles makes impressive fuel economy, power, and a great 6 speed transmission to back it up.

    Good luck...
  • If you want a blue oval truck, go for a 2011 or preferably a 2012 as the 2011's did have a few teething issues such as the passenger side exhaust valves on a few motors. Make sure to keep up on fuel filter maintenance and try to fuel from places of known fuel quality as the cp4 pump utilized in many diesels is known to be a little fragile (kinda like the lift pumps for vp44 dodges).
  • I get the ones built from 2011- present. Lots of problems from 2008-2010 from the EPA leaning curve. 2004-2007 Cunnins and DMAX had pretty good track records.
