I been wondering how do manufacturers determine pay loads? Are they determined by 1) the suspension 2) the frame 3) axle limits 4) tire weight load limitations 5) all of the above 6) or ot...

In '05 Ford gave the 6.0 a 10k GVWR then continued with the 6.4 and 6.7 till 2012 when they mover to the 9900 GVWR or a 10k GVWR ...as was mentioned probably for licensing in those states/provinces that use a GVWR for that purpose.
How ?? Guessing but IMO Ford as Dodge and GM increased engines/transmissions/frames/stronger axles/etc which can make a higher GVWR.
Now just too muddy the GVWR game is a Ford F350 SRW which comes in several GVWRs and also a 10k GVWR on up to a 11500 GVWR for the same exact truck.
So goes the GVWR based payload game.
I recall that my 05 5.4 250 had the same (or very close) GVWR as my friend's 04 6.0 F350, which really surprised me. Before I found this forum, I had always wondered why.
