For some that's true. In my case I have to use full synthetic to get the correct viscosity. The Cummins 6.7L engine calls for 15W40 for all temps above 0 degrees F. But, if you operate in temps below 0 degrees F you have to use 5W40, which is also good for all temps above 0.
"Natural" and semi-synthetic oils are available in 15W40 but the only option for 5W40 is full synthetic. I could run cheaper oil in warmer months, but my change interval is already 15,000 miles so it makes sense just to use synthetic year round. The trucks come pre-filled with Rotella T6 5W40 (at least those delivered to cold climates) so I just stick with it?
