The ton ratings and the model numbers all really need to be dropped. None of them give any useful information about the truck's capabilities. It's all marketing and causes confusion.
The Department of Transportation rates trucks based on GVWR in classes 1 - 8. I will assume that the model numbers of 1500, 2500, 3500 were originally base on the trucks falling into classes 1, 2, and 3 respectively. As trucks have progressed even this is no longer the case. Most 1500 trucks have a GVWR of over 6,000 pounds which puts them into class 2. Many 2500 trucks have a rating of over 10,000 pounds which puts them into class 3. I think some 3500 trucks have a rating of over 14,000 which makes them a class 4.
So, what is your Toyota? It's a class 2 truck. That is as accurate a description as the federal government can give. But, unfortunately, the average consumer has no idea what that means.
