JMtandem,
Wally took his Airstreams round the world so long ago, that Lincoln was scheduled to take Mary on a Byam tour, but something came up with an evening at some theater
Seriously, I get the loyalty, but I've been through the whole Airstream event at the big Florida show, repeatedly, and I just don't see where the current stuff has much to do with back in the day? Lots of visably sketchy workmanship in the interiors, the same garbage appliances that a $15K trailer has, and from a company owned by Thor. Maybe all the magic is well hidden, but for me, I don't see the stellar quality and yacht grade attention to detail I would expect to see, for three times the price of a nicely equipped standard trailer, of the same size.
Abe, Mary and the theater was in the 1860's; Wally's last caravans were in the 1960's. But, what the heck, what is a hundred years one way or the other. I get the point that it was a long time ago and products are not the same today. And your point is well taken. What was aluminum on some earlier Airstreams even into the 1970's and early 1980's are now plastic. And, yea, the refers and hot water heaters and all that are basically the same as many other brands of travel trailers. Even the propane bottles that were aluminum are now just the same metal bottles as found in any RV.
What is still prevalent is the aluminum shell, torsion axles, aluminum roof, and timeless design. If that is important to a potential customer then the value is there; if not, then probably not. I don't sell them, repair them, or make any money off them. Airstream sells every one they make even at wallet flattening prices. So, somebody must like them if not for what they are, then for what iconic values they represent. Makes me wonder if Honest Abe would have chosen an Airstream or a standard box trailer. One hundred years is a long time, we will never know.
