What trailer can I tow behind a Honda Odyssey?

Wow kids can be grabbed at a church. Get s pup and forget about the cheap part. You can get a ten to 12ft model with a wet bath.

+1 to just use the MH.

Or sell the MH and buy a proper tow vehicle and trailer of choice.

Again thanks to all that wrote in, and especially for those who had follow-up comments. It's great when there is a lot of thought in the replies. Suggestions about different trailers or other options were greatly appreciated, and I went and looked at them....that Jack Rabbit trailer would have been awesome when I was with the Boy Scouts...but as I mentioned, one of the reasons I'm interested in a TT vs a P'Up is the shower/bathroom. Still, since my hope would be to go camping with my Grandson, that may not be as important...LOL!!!

After all, as we all know, it's the adventure, not just the journey that is important. And, my problem the past few years, has been that we just don't want to go through the process of pulling out the MH, not to mention, the $1.00 per mile (round trip) cost for fuel.

I guess I'll start looking around for an inexpensive P'Up, and give it a try. We had one about 25 years ago, but only had it for one season, as DW read about some child being kidnapped out of one...so, it was sold. :(

Probably worth it, money wise, to take the money I would use to invest in a P'Up, and actually use the MH......:B

After giving it some more thought over dinner, let me add a few things.

You might look at the Livin' Lite Camplite 13RDB. I don't know the interior height, but width of 7' will let you lie down. I believe it sleeps 6. Dry weight 2250 lb, dry hitch 180. By the time you load up, you'll probably be about 2800-2900 lb (GVWR is 3000) and you should easily be able to load it for 300-350 on the hitch. The Ody appears to have a CCC of about 1350 lb, if the numbers I found for it are correct. Subtract 350 for the hitch, that leaves about 1000 lb for the passengers and stuff. 6 adults could be problematic, but maybe some of your passengers are youngsters?

I've towed trailers of that size with my '08 Highlander for over 140,000 miles. 270 HP, a bit more than the Ody, but a noticeably shorter wheelbase than the minivan. I did have the advantage of 500 lb hitch rating, which allows more flexibility in that regard. Otherwise the two vehicles are similar in size and performance.

Some people I know of in Canada are having custom receivers fabricated for their minivans and with WD they are towing Airstreams with them. But I doubt they are carrying 6 people, unless some are little kids. Cargo capacity is still an issue. But Ody's are tough vehicles with great handling characteristics, good wheelbase, and enough power for most situations; like I said though, you'd want more power in the mountains.

Pappy, I've been through the same thing you're going through. A few years ago when we decided to sell our pop up, I tried really hard to find a travel trailer that we could pull behind my wife's Toyota Sienna. I looked at TrailManors, R-pods, all kinds of different travel trailers and I came to the conclusion in the end that it just wasn't worth the stress and possibly the risk of an accident with the Sienna, so I ended up buying a Chevy Suburban to tow the travel trailer that we eventually ended up with. I don't think minivans are suited to tow any kind of a travel trailer. Popups, yes. Travel trailers no.

Believe me, I tried to make it work but in the end, I came to the conclusion that the weights and the stress of towing a barn door through the air just don't work for a minivan. JMHO.

The Ody could tow a Scamp or Casita 16' or something similar, but they won't sleep that many people. As for hybrids, you would be hard pressed to find one that is under 3500/350 when loaded... but I won't say there aren't any out there, it's possible that there might be one or two.

As for towing power, you'd be ok except on long mountain grades.

My SantaFe is rated for 3500 lbs and I have no problem with my 2000 lb. trailer. If you are loading up 5 people, plus all their gear and a trailer you may have a whole different issue. I did add air springs this year to level out the car which worked really well. That was just for the tongue weight, so if you have a loaded vehicle you would definitely need help in your rear end.

I had an Odyssey for 10.5 years and we once visited an RV dealer and asked about towing a TT. Admirably the guy kept a straight face and said a PUP was the only realistic option.

Traded it this year for my Expy EL so we could buy an safely tow our TT.

PS, at 6'7" any TT small enough for you to tow would likely have a bed that at minimum requires you to hang your lower legs off it (but is much more likely to have hard barriers at top and bottom). And you'll be bent over anytime you're walking inside.

If you want to consider something even less than a typical PUP but can sleep 4-6, look at the Jumping Jack Trailers. You have an ability to add a fair amount of gear on top when the tent is stowed for travel.

I want to thank everyone for their responses. I sorta felt that this was going to be the problem I'd have.
Initially (before we decide to get the MH), we were looking at the Trail-Manor units, because of the weight limits and such that the Odyssey would have.

Guess it's back to the drawing board. I don't want to get rid of the van, it's got low miles, and it's a great vehicle for the family. Maybe we'll look into an inexpensive P'Up, to tow behind for some quick adventures, and save the MH for the longer trips.
I was thinking about the TT, because we've been taking a lot of day trips, and thought that maybe an inexpensive TT for an overnight stay would allow us to keep the van for driving around at our destinations, with the TT as a home base.

Yes, we can get a tow kit for the MH, but figured maybe we had other options.

The stock hitch weight limit on the Odyssey is 350 ;bs. You will need an aftermarket oil cooler to tow anything. Your criteria of how a TT will be used doesn't match with the Honda as a tow vehicle.
