What type of valve is this?
I need to replace this valve and I am having trouble finding out what type of valve that it is and what it does. Can anyone tell me what type of valve it is and what it does?

It is a vacuum breaker. It prevents the possibility of siphoning the tank contents back through the public water system should the public water system fail and result in negative pressure, which the chance of happening is less than hitting the lottery.
They are great at failing to seal for reasons such as valve failure, or low water pressure which causes them to flood the area they're located in when you flush your tanks.
