Wheels running hot

The rear wheels on my TV are running hot when towing. I plan to compare the temps when running unloaded soon. I know I am near the weight limits on my 2500HD, but not over, based on trip to CAT scales. Truck 6 years old but low mileage at 35000 miles.

What should I be checking to see why it is running hot? And I guess I should ask, how warm/hot should I expect wheels to be?

Thanks,
David

  • I am going to pull the trailer Tuesday to drop it for service. I will gun the rim near the tire. My plan is to get the temp after towing for about 90 minutes, let it cool, and get the temp after driving back without trailer.

As for temp, the rim is very hot near the tire. Too hot to hold hand on it for more than a few seconds.

I will post update Tuesday evening.

    Thanks!

    What? :h

First you say your rear wheels are running hot. Then you ask how warm/ hot you should expect. Are they running hot or not? :h How hot are they running?

Where are you gunning? The wheel? The axel? The brake drum? Even the radiant heat coming off of the drum will show up on the gun and make a BIG difference in temp.
  • The rear wheels/hubs will run warm to hot. The brakes will heat them up significantly. Just running loaded will have heat build up from the bearings and the differential. All normal.

How/where are you checking the temps? What air pressure are you running and what is the max pressure on the sidewall of the tires? Need more info to help.
  • Weight the vehicle loaded to determine the actual weight the rear axle is carrying loaded. I bet you are very near or even over the weight rating for the rear axle!
