I trust the OLM. GM's is very good and adjusts based on driving conditions and load. My Suburban I changed first at 6500 miles with 20% left as we were leaving for a 2500+ mile trip and I didn't want to change during vacation time. It's been good for 7-8k miles and 40k now.
Spend $25 on an oil analysis. Then you can determine for yourself how accurate the OLM is.
FWIW, changing oil more often can actually be harmful than the recommended time. Today's oils (like GM's Dexos) have some chemicals which are expected to break down. Changing early can have a higher than average/designed detergents for example.
