I bought a 2013 GMC 3500 SRW 6.0 last year. I am currently using it to tow a fifth wheel toy hauler. The plan is to dump the trailer after this summer (Kids off to college) and replace it with a cab over camper.
I went with the 4.10 gears. I love it. My previous vehicle was a 6.0 F#$D Diesel. When running, the diesel had a ton of power so I have been able to compare the gas to the diesel with regards to performance. The gas motor clearly needs to rev to keep up going up steep hills, but it will get the job done.
I would recommend the 4.10 gears. The difference in MPG will be minimal and the lower gears will certainly be a benefit to you in our Sierra mountains.
As you will find from RV.NET and other Forums is that the gas motors are gas hogs. I have not spoken with anyone who gets great (relatively speaking) gas mileage.
Good Luck
