Just drop down a gear, hills are not a problem for me. If the engine spins 4k and still pulls up the hills, then your not loosing power. I pull in Florida in 5th and lock out 6th gear. In Georgia and north, I pull in 4th. When steep grades hit, I hit 3rd and it has no issues. In the GM 6 speed both 5and 6 gears are both overdrives, 4th gear is direct. I’ve drop gears down even with diesels on hills as well. So really not an issue either way, just the nature of pulling hills.
There are no hills in Florida!
Well the highest point in Florida is 345' above sea level. Not wanting to slam gas engines as they have improved, BUT if you have any thoughts of going over about 12,000# be thinking of a diesel.
Many of the gas is fine posters that say they do fine are towing less than 10,000#, and many of those live in flat areas of the midwest.
The Ram you are looking at with have no issue with the less than 10,000# 5er you are looking at, neither would the Chevy.
Now a couple years down the road you want something bigger and heavier now you have that possibility that the Chevy will have issues in the West in the mountains.
