Whine coming from somewhere!

Truck is at dealer and they are "going over every moving part" with stethoscopes looking for a mysterious whine that has popped up.

Truck is a 2004 Silerado LT3 1500 ext cab 2wd. 253k miles. New engine at 186k. New or newer: battery, alternator, front rotors and a few other things I can't remember at the moment.

It has been faithfully serviced for all maintenance.

The "whine", to my ear... growl to DH's ear, is audible at about 45mph and gets louder and higher pitch as you accelerate. If you let off the gas the noise disappears... hit the gas again and it's back.

I took the service manager for a test ride last week and he immediately said "it's a wheel bearing... don't know which one though" . So in it went the next day. The front wheel bearings were fine, but the rotors needed replacing so they did. Brakes much smoother now... but the noise was still there. At the time they "suspect (ed) that it was a rear pinion bearing and we made an appt to have their "rear end guy" take a look.

As of yesterday afternoon... they had not found the source of the noise..." things sound different up in the air than when the truck is on the ground". I imagine it does.

I've asked about the transmission... and while they "haven't ruled it out" they don't think that's the issue because the noise goes away when you let off the gas.

Does anyone have any suggestions I might "gently" ask them to check?

thanks
cts
