I would almost promise you it is the ring, and pinion it self. As you are on the gas. the "DRIVE" side of the gear set is working. That is where it is whining. When you let off the gas. The "Coast" side of the gear set is working. No whine
The running pattern is set when the ring, and pinion are "lapped / Married" during manufacturing. Over the miles the surfaces wear, and the running pattern moves a little. That wear at 253K is what is prolly causing your noise. That is why it whines only while pulling. If it was the coast side. It would only whine while, well you guessed it, COASTING
Will it actually hurt anything? Not really. Just irritating to hear.
IF you wanted to change gear ratios. Here is your big chance. the ones in it have to come out. Just replace them with the gear you want. Will cost no more to get what you want.
BTW. You have to replace both the ring and pinion. No matter which one is bad. They are a set, and you can't mix them, or the whine will stay.
Warning. IF they let you look at them to show the wear. Don't just grab them. the teeth can be sharp as razors.
Credentials. This is my job. I oversee the making on 2000+ gear sets a day. We have machines that check for the noise you are hearing.
