I don't like spending money any more than most people and I keep reading comments that some people want cheap, simple pickups but the people actually putting their money down seem to have a different ...

Don't forget the big 3 actually make a lot of plan janes. We don't see them on the lot, that is not where the money is.
I retired from a moderate sized oil field company. 600 well tenders, 60 front line supervisors, engineers, middle management, electricians and so on. A little over 1,000 pick ups and SUVs. Replaced every 2 to 4 years. We got a very good price, and employees also got a discount.
Plenty of companies like this across the nation. This is where the "plain" trucks live. When they are done for a big company, they get resold to smaller companies. Then they get junked out. A 10 year old work truck is kinda beat.
