You actually weren't stuck teaching in the state with the lowest teacher pay. I have several teachers in my extended family and none of them seem to have a problem buying new vehicles and paying their mortgages. Perhaps the reason for your financial situation resides in your mirror, not in chosen profession.coolbreeze01 wrote:
Bike shop owner is really proud of his new 1500 Ram for under $20K. Dealer said an old man ordered it, but bought an in stock truck before it came in.
Regular cab, short bed, 2wd, hand crank windows.......;)
Huh? They still offer hand crank windows??? I thought those went extinct along with the dinosaurs... :D
As a schoolteacher in the state with the lowest teacher pay in the nation, I can't afford to buy a new truck. Even with the mortgage paid off! My congratulations to those of you who found higher paying careers and can afford the high-dollar trucks!
You've touched on kind of a pet peeve of mine too. Teachers choose their job, they aren't forced into it. And when you scale the salary to account for 4 months of vacation a year it's not so low anymore. I have a few family members who are teachers and often bang this drum and sometimes it's hard to hold my tongue.
Ida, I agree with you for the most part.
(At least this thread stayed on topic! Lol)
Especially in the part that if you add back in the 33% for the time off, it normalizes salary a bunch.
I must be dumb and work too many hours for my $. I've had 4 months off total in about the last 5 years. Just took the first vacation longer than a week this year, for the first time in years. 3 weeks. Never done that before and it was because I was changing jobs.
I don't get to coach my kids, have to work late most nights, etc, etc.
We got Const workers up here making $100-150k a year. High wages, but those are the guys that work OT and are good. Guys that work 40s with somemlayoff time ***** about being broke!
On the flip side, I think post elementary teachers should make more. I want the best education for my kids, not some slob who half a ss es it because they are sore about their salary.
