Where someone chooses to live is their choice. Economics is just one factor for your choice. If the economics are bad (high cost with low pay), you are most likely staying for other reasons. If those other reasons start to lose appeal or economics becomes more of a priority, you have to move where it will make you happy.
I may like to live in some other locations than where I am now, but I have to factor in quality of lifestyle, job availability, accessibility, weather and politics into the mix and not just cost of living. It's the same with the job you choose and which employer. I work to live and need the proper balance to accomplish this. I could work harder and get paid more sacrificing personal time now in hopes of amassing enough resources to retire earlier, I can work day to day without regard for the future or I can mix the combination into something I can live with today and hopefully tomorrow.
Purchases make up part of affordability. You can buy nothing but essentials all your life and squirrel the excess away or you can live paycheck to paycheck and have everything on payments. Which comes back around to this thread topic: If a basic truck does what you need, there is no sense over spending for items you do not appreciate. If the luxuries in a vehicle make life more pleasant for you, then your focus should be beyond the Tradesman and XL trim levels.
