"A good friend from the 70's drove a Chev 3/4 ton with a 6 cyl. trans on the floor, pull a 35 ft. trailer with cars in it and had a home in Denver and one in Phx. He always made the trip loaded, why can't the rest do it."
A very different mindset today in the driving public.
Sure, they can do it! All you have to do is gear the little displacement engine so it can still go a max of 55MPH with the engine screaming from the high RPM's when pulling a 14K+ loaded trailer behind that light weight tow vehicle like they were in the 70's without having the insane overly mandated crash laws and the EPA requirements that will only get worse in the future to pull your load. That 14K+ loaded trailer will be your 3-5 month home when traveling to a warm winter climate a thousand or more miles away.
However, that's on fairly flat roads and when it comes to climbing up the mouitains to go over a pass or other long or steep grades, just get used to 2nd type gear at 20-25MPH with the engine still screaming and no more throttle to be had. The older forum members like us who pulled back in the 70's know what it's like with a little 6 cylinder engine in a light truck and the engines weren't choked with todays power robbing polution controls.
DUH, you'd better not pullover on those long steep grades to let the dozens of vehicles behind you pass because you'll have one heck of a time getting back to even the 20-25MPH turtle speed ascending the grade again just like it used to be back when the small displacement unstifled engines experienced pulling a 7-9K trailer. Been there, done that many so times! Alas! The OTR trucker are gonna love you as they will be stuck behind you even when you are descending the same grade at 20-25MPH with your light small tow vehicle rig with the heavy trailer with burning brakes threatening to mow your little tow vehicle over. NA people are not going to go back to a 19 or 20' trailer the little engine can pull as their winter home, Period!
At the very same time, states are trying to raise their highway and interstates speed limits another 10 MPH. let's just see if it's sensible formula. A 25 MPH trailer rig being approached from behind by a vehicle going 80 MPH. Think there just might be a real problem about to happen??? Even the OTR trucks are at a min of 55MPH and you'd be just a speed bump to them.
