I think NA inadvertently fell in love with big pick-ups when mega GVWR was required to beat the early, unpopular EPA polution mandates. These "cheaters" had to be big to qualify and many people initially started justifying the size with remarks about how safe their family would be, etc... oversize became legendary... then it became real.
But big pick-ups were never necessary. Using smaller trucks is no big deal, at least to the laws of physics. As an example, I can take a truck half the size and weight of mine and tow my 7k plus TT with it just as well. It's all a matter of leverage.
Half the weight truck, coupled with a trailer tongue twice as long, gives me half the tongue weight, and the same towing leverage and control. Simple as that. A small design change, except...
Except I do need the same power, about 180 hp, on the interstate, to beat the wind and hills. It doesn't need to be diesel, any turbo will do now with direct injection.
On the other hand, continuing with the extended hitch, brakes don't matter much if the trailer has good brakes of it's own. Steering doesn't matter... because I use the same human arms to turn the steering wheel. It can be done with no power steering on any size truck, but PS is a convenience. All a matter of leverage to turn 1000's of pounds. Remember, the little truck has twice the leverage to complete the turn meaning it needs half the traction.
I think the OP is right. Nobody here wants to really buy the mid 70's godzilla sedans with the extended crash bumpers. Todays big-hulk, low mpg pick-ups will be considered just as ugly some fine day in the future.
