Who will buy the old pickups in a few years?

Big pickups, I'm talking about, the more we travel the world and see that large pickups are a thing of the past. In a few years Rver's will be towing with 1/4 ton pickup, maybe they can still have a little 3 cyc. diesel engine. Sad to see this all coming to the USA. We have always had good size pickups over here, but I think thats about over with.
Maybe a 1/4 ton can pull a 36 ft. 5th wheel if the gears are right and the pin weight is not to bad.
  • Next TV is gonna be diesel mini with a roof mount 5'er hitch like the you tube of the VW that keeps popping up. Parking it should be a snap, stopping.... not so much. :S LOL

    I agree.

Smaller vehicles are getting better. If someone told me...say 20 years ago... that by 2013 we would have half ton trucks, with small turbo diesels (Dodge 1500) and 8 speeds forward, I would have trouble believing that. But it has happened.

Or the Ford F 150...ostensibly the light truck in the F series line. Now you can get a turbo gas V6...6 speeds forward and if I recall correctly...this thing is rated to tow over 10,000 lbs...with relative ease.

    Light trucks have improved significantly.

....and...I understand that GM and Ford are working on transmissions that will be used for both company vehicles. The tranny for the FWD models will have 9 speeds...the RWD vehicles....will have 10 speeds.

Unbelievable that they will have this many gears....and even more unbelievable that Ford and GM...have actually co developed these future transmission's.

    I don't know about a 1/4 ton towing a 36 foot trailer.

But yes....who knows what vehicles are in store for the future.

    Umm,

Ford and GMC got special permission from the US Government to design the current 6 speed used in the F-150 to F-350 and the GMC trucks as well. That was 8-10 years ago. Now they are co-designing the 8, 9 and 10 speed transmissions to meet future emissions standards and gas mileage standards.

It is a great thing that the transmissions are so much stronger than the 90's transmissions.

    Fred.
  • I think if you can buy a good used older diesel truck , do it and count it as a blessing.

A couple of our friends are diesel mechanics and they both say they will not buy a new one. They are far too expensive to repair, not as easy for the average guy and have way more breakdowns and mechanical issues than the older trucks.

I don't think that the larger pickups will completely die off. Lets face it, most of us men and women who want a truck, want a "real" truck, LOL

On our street alone there are 25 houses. There are...12..1/2 tons, 10..3/4 ton and 2..1 ton trucks.
There are 4 Avalanches, 3 Jeeps, 4 small trucks, 2 vans and 6 cars.

I think that the trucks are still doing fairly well.
