Turbos are not some new and exotic technology. They're designed to last the life of the vehicle, and even in the event one fails they cost about $600 new.
There are many more expensive things that I'd be worried about breaking first.
Note that I'm not trying to discourage getting the 5.0L. It is a very good engine as well, and I can see where choosing between the two is a tough choice. I just hate seeing the EB removed from consideration because of the "turbos are unreliable and expensive" myth that comes from backyard mechanics putting turbos on engines that aren't designed for them.
My thoughts exactly. Where an engine is designed and intended to run turbos, you rarely have issues. I'm on my 3rd consecutive turbo charged engine ('02 VW Passat 1.8T, '06 Chevy Duramax), and haven't had a minute's worry about the turbos. My review of forums on each of these vehicles has indicated that turbo failures just aren't an issue.
But if you don't like it or aren't comfortable with it, don't buy it! Have you driven each of the trucks? An extended test drive in an EB was really all I needed to make a decision. The n/a V8's fell out of contention very quickly. I just liked the power delivery characteristics of the EB so much better than the V8's.
Of course, I was coming from being used to driving turbos before, and also having been spoiled by the massive low end torque of the Duramax. The EB mimics the diesel's power delivery to a degree, and delivers exactly what I was looking for but didn't know existed in a 1/2 ton -- low end torque and the ability to tow in top gear on the highway, which my GM 5.3, and I suspect the 5.0 for the most part, simply will not do.
