Automobiles are similar. They cost only a few thousand to make. Yet cost much more to the consumer. Lots of government regulation and legacy costs go into final pricing. Everyone down the line also needs to make a profit to cover overhead expenses.
When we bought ours new in 2008 I looked at what was supposed to be the highest quality TC on the market. In five minutes I found many little things that were wrong. That one unit could have been a lemon? Water pumps can be made to be quiet. Does every consumer want to pay for this? Most probably don't care. My wife cares, I don't.
