I question most people really can identify quality, especially if it is outside the craft they are trained in. Most people shop for the styling. I really have no idea as to what it cost to build a TC, but would like to know how someone came to the conclusion $3000 for material. I think it is fair to say they have not purchased and TC related parts. Some folks make some pretty outlandish statements.
I have a 1988 clamshell TC. I am the second owner. My TC has never been under a cover in its 25 years. It has only had one leak, a window caulking failed. All doors, drawers and cabinetry are still as built. I upgraded my TC and replaced or rebuilt all of the appliances with a material cost (no labor) of about $9000 (retail cost). My point is, people complain about quality, and still buy a lower quality TC. I think it starts with the purchaser choosing color over quality.
It is hard for me to imagine taking more than one hour on a given TC, to identify shoddy craftsmanship.
