In 1967, Avion built Avions. Fleetwood bought them out several years later and that was the beginning of the end IMHO.
No argument, but that is not the point I was making. Fleetwood had more than enough management and financial skills to make the best. And a few short years later, Avions were discontinued. It was about poor management decisions, not poor RV quality. Avion did not do what Harley Davidson did when they bought themselves back from a bowling pin manufacturer. Avion did not do what Airstream did when they freed themselves from Beatrice Foods, a food manufacturer. Fleetwood that did so much right for so long to get to a prominent place in American corporations let it all go down the drain. Too bad. They are now trying to reinvent themselves, an action that would not have to be done if the management would have made better decisions. Today Harley Davidson is doing well as is Airstream. We will see what happens to Fleetwood.
People say they want quality but do they really? Today's pickups cost $50,000 or more. They last 200,000+ miles with a gas engine; substantially longer for diesel. They are perhaps the highest quality pickup trucks ever made. And what do people do? Instead of raving about the quality, they complain about the cost.
