If you look at some of the pictures where quality is suspect, it really doesn't take a trained professional to tell that a low quality wood was used or that staples did not reach their intended target.
The wood in the picture below looks like salvaged re-sawn 2" lumber that is used in shipping crates.
But, like you say, that may be normal for some.
