Perhaps a better question would be "why are people paying so much for such an inferior product?". What was it PT Barnum used to say?
To build a TC is more than just materials and labor. There is a huge investment in the infrastructure - buildings, machinery, property. Add to that government regulations - rules, taxes, etc. Transportation costs are not free. Utilities - water, electricity, gas, etc. Computers and CAD operators, CNC operators all come at a high cost.
All you Wall Street Occupiers need to dig deeper.
Yea, but when a camper costs as much as the truck carrying it? Think about what it takes to build that truck in materials and energy alone. Just to smelt the steel that goes into a truck, the mind boggles how they can sell them so cheaply.
The only reason campers cost what they do is market demand. If people weren't paying, they would have to change their practices or go out of business.
Look at quantity built vs. $ invested. If you screw up a piece of sheet metal, you recover some of the cost by recycling. Screw up a laminated piece of fiberglass and check the residual value.
I am not saying they couldn't be built better, but I do have a grasp on investment $ necessary to manufacture products.
