deserboy quote: If fiberglass were stronger and cheaper to work with we would all be drinking from fiberglass cans.
That is hilarious!
I've heard many times that one of the major contributors to a business failing, is underestimating the cost of doing business - and especially the assignment of overhead. So, I'm pretty sure any rough guesstimate we come up with, of what it costs to build these things, stands a good chance of being way off.
Of the many, many rv's I've inspected over the years, I feel that many of the truck camper brands are of much higher quality than the industry standard. Honestly, it's amazing some of them stay together at all . . . then again, some don't.
Personally, we love our Lance camper and hope it treats us good as our first one.
As so many others have already stated so well, I have also observed that many consumers want quality, but don't want to pay for it. Furthermore, many consumers talk quality, but are really looking for flash and, in the end, buy what looks pretty. This was one of the hurdles (in my opinion) that led to the collapse of Alpenlite (Western RV). They built very nice, high-end units, but they lacked eye appeal.
In regards to the comparison of home construction-vs-rv -- all I can say is I've run across several less than impressive items in the construction of our home and some are just downright negligence and laziness. Errors I can understand (we're all human), but negligence, or not caring about the end product the customer receives, just ticks me off. This goes for a home, rv, or a restaurant meal. Customers deserve to get what they pay for.
Now, enough of this whining. Let's go camping!!
