Why are Truck Campers so poorly made?

Or at least they don't make them or anything else like they used to do they? This one may be older than my 43 years, I reckon its worn out a few good trucks and people. I just don't like that rubber membrane on top my new TC, What is that stuff? and why do they do that? I mean seriously? Are all the new ones like that? Does it hold up? Im scared to bring mine out of the barn unless Im using it. Im asking because I don't know, Not out of sarcasm, I just bought my first TC in may 2013, and my second one today. I don't think the TC's are made with any less integrity than any other TT or 5th wheel. I think they all need a good roof on them and a good shell. And Im sure some do. I would like to know more about that sheet of rubber on top my other camper.
