Why did you decide to buy new instead of used trailer?

Because of the drive-off-the-lot-depreciation with a new trailer, we would like to find a good, used TT, but are just not finding any good ones that meet our needs. I have been looking at a lot of them on CL and have become leery of the claims of perfect condition when I see delamination or inside damage in their photos.

Did you choose new over used to avoid problems hidden by previous owners, or was it to get a trailer built for your needs, or something different?

  • We looked at hundreds (not all in person) of used and new travel trailers before buying our first used one. Lots of garbage out there. We found one that had been cared for well and fit what we needed. When we started looking for our second, we wanted new, but could not afford the price for the one we wanted. We looked at used and found one a year old (older couple had purchased, husband died before they were able to use it). We got it for a good price, still had a number of things to fix and it is doing the job.

If you can afford it, nothing wrong with getting a new trailer. You will still have some items to fix or modify. If you need to buy used, just keep searching.
  • Yes, we bought new for those reasons. So many we saw smelled funny, were too worn looking, plus our list of "must haves" could only be fulfilled by ordering new. We started late in our lives and wanted it right from the beginning, and even then we traded in once for things we didn't realize we needed!
  • As you said, I didn't want to inherit someone else's problems. I also wanted a warranty. We negotiated a pretty good price and had a decent down payment. I owe quite a bit less than it is worth and the manufacturer I chose, tends to hold their value a little better. I tend to buy new for my vehicles as well, again, just don't want someone else's headaches.
