This is a myth from 30-40yr ago when gas engines were lucky to get 100k miles and diesel engines were simple mechanical affairs with almost nothing to fail.
It's nothing to get 250k miles out of a modern gas engine...assuming typical 12k miles per year, that's a good 20yrs of use and by then the rest of the truck is typically toast.
At the same time diesels have gotten drastically more complicated, so if anything the longevity has come down.
