Gee, it's just semantics. Why do people in some parts of the country say "pop", in others its a "coke", and still others it's "soda". The short answer is "because".
Same for trucks, "because". That said does it really make that much difference how people refer to the various truck grades?
I'll say this, referring to 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, 1 ton, is far easier to keep track of than model numbers and the myriad of options available.
