Let's see...
Many years ago, my first pickup was a "half ton". It was a 1936 Ford. It was registered for "UNDER 6000 LBS. GVW", and had to have that sticker on the side of the box.
Some years later, my truck was a 1951 Ford F1. It was also registered for "UNDER 6000 LBS. GVW", and had to have that sticker on the side of the box.
In fact, all of my "half ton" pickups were registered for "Under 6000 GVW"!
Then I got a few C20 and K20 Chevys. they were registered for "Under 8000 GVW"
My old Dodge Ram 3500 CTD was registered for 14,000 GVW. the sticker on the side had disappeared by that time.
It is worthy of note that the actual weight of the truck was never considered when designating the GVW. It was legal up to the posted weight. The "half ton" trucks might only weigh 2000 lbs, but they could be loaded to 5,999 lbs (3,999 payload) and be legal at the weigh station!
Which just goes to prove that there never was a "half ton" truck in Montana, according to legal loads!
