I think that the education from the OEM's needs to be on that fine print. While loading, GVW, GCWR, available payload are not 'hidden' from the buyers its not explicitly stated in language that most newbies can understand.
Ram has taken a pretty good stab at it in their "before you buy" web page

Ram basically states if you need to tow boats, ATV's, or trailers then the 1500 may be the truck for you. The page also suggests that if you are a recreational tower who tows a horse trailer or a RV you may want the capability of the 2500 or 3500 truck.
I couldn't find a comparable tool for Ford or GM.
