It's just another misnomer that the industry and the general public has adopted. I don't think of 1,000 lbs when I hear the term "half-ton", but a class of truck. Technically AA and AAA, that we commonly refer to as batteries, are actually just cells. You need link two or more cells to make a battery. Life is full of these things.
