Why does having the furnace on produce a sewer smell ?

We're currently in Arizona. The temperatures drop down to the 30 Fs during the night. To conserve energy, we close the door to our bedroom and only have a small electric fan heater going at the 45 F level. We turn off the propane gas heater that heats everything including the dining, living, and kitchen areas of our 30'+ permanent trailer. The inlet to the gas furnace is in those areas.

This means that we run the furnace for a fairly long time in the mornings to heat up these latter areas. Sometimes, not always, after a while of running the furnace, a sewer smell starts to appear.

I tell my DW I think it's because we have no windows open. She thinks it means the Black/Grey tanks need to be emptied.

What is your opinion/suggestions ? Thank you.
  • Possibility exists that the one of the sinks has an interior vent as in this drawing http://www.diyadvice.com/diy/plumbing/kitchen/install-air-admittance-valve/. If the back flow preventer is defective you may get a backflow of air from the tank. Check sink furthest from tank first for this piece.
  • Do you leave some water in the toilet bowl? Sometimes I notice some sewer smells if I leave the bathroom vent open.
